National Indigenous Peoples’ Day – June 21st: We would like to start announcements today by acknowledging that the land on which we learn, work, and play is the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.  We are grateful to our friends and colleagues in the Nations for the opportunity to learn in this amazing place.

Tomorrow is National Indigenous People’s Day!!!  There are a number of amazing events in the community to celebrate tomorrow!  Head down to Chief Joe Mathias Centre, Trout Lake or the Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver, or to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler for great opportunities to celebrate Indigenous culture!

Because today is our last official day of attendance, today’s Squamish phrase of the day is “Huy̓ melh halh” (pronunciation link: https://www.kwiawtstelmexw.com/language_resources/greetings-in-skwxwu7mesh/) It means Goodbye.  Today at lunch, join us on the field for a game of Lacrosse, Canada’s Official Summer Sport!  Lacrosse was first played by First Nations over 500 years ago as part of festivals, to settle tribal differences, to prepare warriors for hunting and battle, or for fun!  All staff and students are encouraged to join – see you on the field at lunch!

Did you know that this Friday is National Indigenous People’s Day? On June 21, Canadians recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.  The Canadian Constitution recognizes these three groups as Aboriginal peoples, also known as Indigenous peoples.

This week, we will be starting announcements by acknowledging that the land on which we learn, work, and play is the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.  We are grateful to our friends and colleagues in the Nations for the opportunity to learn in this amazing place.

Every day this week at Rockridge, we will be learning Squamish phrases and hosting events to celebrate the heritage and culture of Indigenous Peoples in Canada!  Today at lunch, join Ms. Langlois in Player’s Hall for a workshop on how to weave a Coast Salish pouch!  All Materials will be provided!

  • Congratulations to our Junior Boys’ Rugby Team who defeated #1 ranked Abbotsford to advance to the Provincial Semi-Finals!  The boys demonstrated great determination in their hard-fought win at Burnaby Lake on Saturday.  Congratulations to Clayton Miller for being awarded Man of the Match and to all the boys for their outstanding efforts.
  • Meanwhile our Senior Boys’ Rugby team is playing in the Provincials this week as well.  Well done Coaches Zambon and Lawson!
  • Good luck to our Ice Hockey team this afternoon in the Championship Finals against Windsor.  With a lean roster last Thursday they came up short in game #1, yet without a rugby game conflict today, Coach Kim should be able to field a strong team for this must win game.  Good luck Ravens!
