MYP Subject Criteria

Each MYP course has four assessment criteria (A, B, C and D), and each criterion is assessed on an 8-point scale. Please note that these criterions are not assessed ‘out of 8.’ Rather, each level corresponds to a specific performance descriptor that indicates a student’s achievement. These levels of achievement are:

• Emerging (Levels 1-2):  Demonstrates an initial understanding of the expected learning.

• Developing (Levels 3-4):  Demonstrates a partial understanding of the expected learning.

• Proficient (Levels 5-6):  Demonstrates a complete understanding of the expected learning.

• Extending (Levels 7-8):  Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the expected learning.

Understanding the Final MYP Learning Update

​Whereas each criterion is assessed on an 8-point scale, you will notice that the final Learning Update also indicates an “Overall Level of Achievement” (OLA) that is calculated on a separate 7-point scale. The OLA is determined by adding the criterion levels together to generate a total out of 32. This total is then converted to a 7-point scale and a corresponding BC Ministry of Education percentage.
