The four IB programmes
The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers four programmes of international education:
- the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)
- the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)
- the IB Diploma Programme
- the IB Career-related Certificate
While these programmes provide an opportunity for a continuous international education experience from early childhood through to school graduation, each programme is self-contained; there is no requirement for schools to offer or for students to take more than one programme.
There is, however, a common educational framework – a consistent philosophy about teaching and learning that focuses on the development of the whole child, and an overarching concept of how to develop international-mindedness.
The IB programmes in West Vancouver Schools
West Vancouver Schools offers the following three authorized IB programmes:
- West Vancouver Secondary School (introduced in 1987)
IB Primary Years Programme
- West Bay Elementary School (introduced in 2005)
- Cypress Park Primary School (introduced in 2007)
- Ecole Cedardale Elementary (introduced in 2016)
The IB Middle Years Programme
Unlike the Diploma Programme, which aims to provide students with the qualifications to gain entry to universities anywhere in the world and thus may not be the best fit for all students, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an inclusive programme with the flexibility to meet the needs of all students.
The MYP curriculum has eight subject areas:
- Language A
- Language B
- Physical Education
While each academic discipline has its own methodology, body of knowledge and nuances, students learn better when meaningful connections are made between the disciplines.
Students become increasingly aware of the connections between subject content and the real world, rather than considering subjects as isolated areas unrelated to each other and to the world. As a result, students are expected to develop an awareness of broader, more complex global issues.
The learning environment: Active learning in a supportive
The IB approach to teaching and learning is described in three categories:
- learning how to learn
- structured inquiry
- critical thinking
With the IB MYP, diverse learning styles are understood and accommodated. In this environment, students feel secure and their ideas are valued and respected.
Within the MYP, learning is engaging, challenging, rigourous, relevant and significant. Students are encouraged in everything they do in school to become autonomous lifelong learners.
