The IB MYP
Unlike the Diploma Programme, which aims to provide students with the qualifications to gain entry to universities anywhere in the world and thus may not be the best fit for all students, the IB MYP is an inclusive programme with the flexibility to meet the needs of all students.
The MYP curriculum has eight subject areas:
- Language and Literature
- Language Acquisition
- Individuals and Societies
- Physical and Health Education
While each academic discipline has its own methodology, body of knowledge and nuances, students learn better when meaningful connections are made between the disciplines.
Students become increasingly aware of the connections between subject content and the real world, rather than considering subjects as isolated areas unrelated to each other and to the world. As a result, students are expected to develop an awareness of broader, more complex global issues.
The learning environment: Active learning in a supportive community
The IB approach to teaching and learning is described in three categories:
- learning how to learn
- structured inquiry
- critical thinking
With the IB MYP, diverse learning styles are understood and accommodated. In this environment, students feel secure and their ideas are valued and respected.
Within the MYP, learning is engaging, challenging, rigourous, relevant and significant. Students are encouraged in everything they do in school to become autonomous lifelong learners.
