Police and school district urge safety over spring break

West Vancouver – Just ahead of the two-week spring break, school district officials and the West Vancouver Police Department have joined together to remind parents, guardians and students to stay safe over the holidays. Spring break begins on March 14 and includes the Easter long weekend, with students returning to school on Tuesday, March 29.
“While many families will be heading out of town, we know from previous years that students will be spending a fair amount of their spare time with their peers,” says Police Chief Len Goerke. “We want to encourage young people to think carefully about the consequences of their actions on area roads and at social events.”
In previous years, the spring break period brings an increase in traffic accidents, which cause more serious injuries in the youth demographic than any other activity.
“It only takes a moment to change the course of a life,” says Superintendent Chris Kennedy. “We want all of our students to come back to class on March 29th with good stories about the time they shared with friends and family.”
The WVPD and school district officials encourage parents to discuss safe driving with their older children, and persuade younger children to find alternate means of transportation. Drivers with an ‘N’ (Class 7) license may not operate a vehicle with more than one passenger (excluding family) unless a supervisor age 25+ is also in the vehicle. Hand-held and hands-free devices are also prohibited in the Graduated Licensing Program.
