Ice Hockey Development
West Vancouver Schools (WVS) has provided secondary school students with a variety of hockey formats for well over a decade. For the 2025-2026 school year, we are excited to be joining forces with West Vancouver Minor Hockey and RK 4 Development to offer students high level on ice hockey skills development and off ice dryland training, within the school timetable.

The Program Concept

The WVS Premier Hockey Academy is designed for students who wish to improve their individual hockey skills and gain further knowledge around positional and tactical game play.  The growth and development of our student athletes is our priority.  West Vancouver Schools, West Van Minor Hockey and RK4 Development are committed to providing students with the opportunity to excel in hockey skill development and hockey specific strength training in a fun, encouraging, safe and supportive environment.

Students entering Grades 8 and 9 at either Rockridge, Sentinel or West Van Secondary are eligible to apply.  The program runs from September to June and students partaking receiving credit for Physical and Health Education: Hockey Academy.

Program Specifics

  • This program is designed for students who currently play hockey and are looking to advance their skills and knowledge of the game
  • Registrants must have proficient hockey and skating abilities and will be required to attend a formal assessment process to determine eligibility for the program
  • Professional coaches who are accredited by Hockey Canada with a minimum of Coach 2 and Development One designation will run the ice times
  • Off ice training will be led by Ryan Kerr of RK 4 Development, North Vancouver.  Ryan is a highly respected hockey specific personal trainer whose clients include many BCHL, NCAA, WHL and NHL level players
  • Ice times and dryland will be from 1:45 to 3:00pm
  • Sports psychology and other accredited specialists will be invited to lead classroom sessions

Curriculum and Goals

  • The curriculum has been developed by WVMH and WVS adhering to the PHE curriculum as set out in the MOECC guidelines
  • The focus will be on individual skill development and small game play
  • Development categories include skating, puck control, ‘creating time and space’, as well as offensive and defensive tactics
  • Along with individual skill development and improved game play, the Premier Hockey Academy aims to foster and encourage leadership, good sportsmanship, and respect for all
  • The PHE Goals include physical literacy, healthy and active living, and mental well being

Fees

This is a cost recovery program and the fees will be determined by the number of program registrants.  The range is expected to be between $400 and $500 per month, for September to June.  More detailed information on fees will follow in the new year.
