Outstanding Facilities

The facilities department at West Vancouver Schools manages school and administration sites across three municipal boundaries. Beginning on the east side at École Cedardale, it stretches to Bowen Island in the west and all the way up to Lions Bay in the North. Safety and health are the department’s top priorities, closely followed by preserving and investing in the school district’s physical buildings and surrounding spaces. Our strategic approach includes community partnerships, shared service agreement and a well-managed, pro-active facilities plan to ensure that our buildings will continue to offer a safe and healthy learning environment well into the future.

Our main facilities centre is at located at 3850 Cypress Bowl Road, and employs 67 highly skilled staff members. Our trades include carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing and welding. Other services provided by facilities include building and grounds maintenance, custodial support and snow removal. Whether renovating or innovating, facilities provides services to more than 7200 students and 1100 staff members across the school district.

Asbestos

Almost all of West Vancouver School’s buildings were constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and accordingly asbestos may have been used in their construction.  Any asbestos contained in our buildings is inert until disturbed through renovation, however in order to protect the health and safety of both students and staff, strict protocols are followed when work is performed at any of our sites.  Asbestos consultants have conducted an in-depth survey of all structures, and the presence of asbestos has been posted at the entry to every room. All facilities work is preceded by a risk assessment of hazardous materials, and whenever necessary trained, qualified technicians are employed to contain and dispose of such material.
