Community partners march to promote safe, healthy schools

The West Vancouver Police Department, West Vancouver Schools and the Squamish Nation will join together on February 24 to paint West Vancouver pink.

Beginning at 10:30 am, about 240 students from Hollyburn Elementary school will march with Squamish Nation drummers, and officers from the WVPD to the Squamish Nation Welcome Figure at Say Wi / Ambleside Park for a rally.

The Annual Pink Shirt Day campaign began in 2007 in Nova Scotia, after a group of high school students wore pink t-shirts to support a fellow student. The campaign has grown into a nationwide reminder of the importance of countering peer victimization.

West Vancouver Police work actively throughout the year with youth, schools, youth organizations and other police agencies to build greater understanding around the need to prevent violence and ensure that students have access to needed support.

West Vancouver Schools 17 public schools promote inclusion and respect to set a positive school climate with various year-round activities and clubs. In addition, each school plans activities for the week to raise awareness around the issue of bullying and build connections among students, including flash mobs, Me2We Clubs, mentoring and education through assemblies.
