AP 547 – Alcohol in Schools

Background

The District generally considers the consumption of alcohol on school premises to be incompatible with the purpose of education. However, adult groups connected to schools may make application to the district, through the principal, to host appropriate activities involving the use of alcohol when no students are present. Student safety, supervision, and appropriate role modelling are the primary considerations in all decisions related to alcohol at schools and school‑sponsored events.

Procedures

  1. Alcohol will not be served, consumed, or present at any school or school‑sponsored event when students are present, regardless of the time of day, location, or nature of the event.
  2. The Parent Advisory Committee or other school group wishing to host an adult only event involving the service of alcohol must receive the permission of the principal. This decision will be made by the principal in consultation with the Superintendent or designate.
  3. No approval will be given for the service of alcohol at events held during regular school hours.
  4. All requirements of the BC Liquor Control and Licensing Act, and any other applicable legislation or regulation, must be met, and all required licensing must be in place.
  5. School‑sponsored events held off‑site where alcohol is served are expected to maintain the same expectations regarding the presence of students.
  6. The District reserves the right to deny any request related to the service or presence of alcohol at schools or school‑sponsored events.
