Home Fire Safety

Fire Safety is an important topic in any household, and preparation and ongoing discussion are key. Being fire-smart includes having discussions as a family. Please include your international student and discuss the safety procedures in your home together.

  4. Cook carefully; fire extinguishers and usage
  5. Give space heaters space
  6. Matches and Lighters and tools, not toys
  7. Stop, Drop and Roll
  8. Use electricity safely
  9. Crawl low under smoke

Here are some recommended fire protection requirements in residential homes: Placement of smoke alarms

 

Placement of Smoke Alarms

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends placement of at least one smoke alarm
    a. on every level of the home (including basements),
    b. in every bedroom, and
    c. outside each sleeping area.
  •  The NFPA also recommends interconnection of alarms to provide better whole-home protection than stand-alone alarms.
  • Leading authorities recommend that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help ensure maximum detection of the various types of fires that can occur within the home (most households choose one style for their own home).
  • If hard-wired, always with Battery Back-up alarms.
  • Telus Smart Smoke Alarm
  • Replace batteries once a year.

Smoke detectors expire and should be replaced every 10 years. An expiry, manufactured, or installed date may be on the detector.

 

Combination Smoke/CO Alarms

  • Industry experts recommend a CO alarm be installed on each level of the home – ideally on any level with fuel-burning appliances and outside of sleeping areas.
  • A combination alarm can satisfy one of your smoke alarm location requirements as well as a carbon monoxide location.

 

Placement of Fire Extinguishers

Step 1: Choose Primary Fire Extinguishers (Must Have)

  • For your main home protection, install a 2-A:10-B-C rated extinguisher on every level of your home – no more than 40 feet apart.
  • This could include locations such as living areas, garages, and workshops.

Step 2: Choose Supplementary Fire Extinguishers (Should Have)

  • The kitchen is the likeliest place you will have a fire. Protect special locations in your home with a UL-rated fire extinguisher.

 

Please ensure a smoke alarm is installed in every bedroom and the hall outside, and on every floor. A CO on every floor as well (can be a combination CO & Smoke).
