Damage Claim Guidelines

  1. The host must immediately inform the Accommodation Coordinator of damages caused by the student.
  2. The host must send photos of the damages to the Accommodation Coordinator. The Accommodation Coordinator may visit the home to assess the damages if necessary (damages must be beyond normal wear and tear).
  3. The host must provide the Accommodation Coordinator with two repair quotes within one week of submitting the damage claim.
  4. The Accommodation Coordinator will meet with the student within one week of the damage claim.
  5. The host must submit a claim through their home insurance as soon as possible.
    1. If GuardMe coverage applies (i.e. first-year student), the host family may claim the home insurance deductible through GuardMe.
    2. The host family should contact the Accommodation Coordinator for the appropriate paperwork to submit a claim directly through GuardMe.
  6. If the cost of damage exceeds $1,000, the host must submit a claim through home insurance.
  7. In cases where the host family does not have home insurance, a claim through GuardMe insurance (for first-year students) may be possible. GuardMe may cover some damages up to 50 percent (see point 5b).
  8. If GuardMe denies the damage claim, the Accommodation Coordinator will contact the natural parents to request payment to the host to cover the repair costs (including photos and quotes previously provided).
