How to Make and Submit Your Applicant Introduction Video
For secondary students applying to West Vancouver Schools International Programs
Why Do I Need to Make a Video?
As part of your application, we ask you to record a short video so we can get to know you as a person, not just as a student on paper. This video helps us understand your interests, why you would like to join our program, and demonstrates your communication skills.
You do not need professional equipment or special editing skills. A smartphone, tablet, or computer is fine. What matters most is that we can see and hear you clearly, and that you speak naturally.
What Should I Talk About?
Your video should be 1 to 2 minutes long. Please include the following:
- Introduction (about 20 seconds):
- Say your name, your current grade, and the school you attend now.
- Share one personal fact that is not on your application (for example, a hobby, favorite book, or a place you want to visit).
- Main Message (about 60 to 90 seconds):
- Answer the questions:
- Why do you want to study at West Vancouver Schools?
- What will you bring to our school community (skills, interests, personality)?
- You can also mention a specific program, course, or activity at West Vancouver that excites you (for example: sports teams, arts programs, clubs, or academic opportunities).
- Closing (about 10–20 seconds):
- End with a short thank-you message.
How Should I Prepare?
Many students feel nervous making a video. These steps will help:
- Plan a short script. Write down your main ideas in three parts (introduction, body, conclusion). You do not need to memorize every word.
- Practice first. Record yourself a few times and choose the best version.
- Speak naturally. Do not read from your paper like a robot. Imagine you are talking to a teacher or friend.
- Smile and make eye contact with the camera. This helps us see your confidence.
Where Should I Record?
Your background and sound matter. Please:
- Record in a quiet, clean, and well-lit space (near a window during the day is best).
- Avoid messy rooms, people walking behind you, or loud noises.
- Use natural light or a soft lamp so we can see your face clearly.
- Make sure there is no music or distracting sounds in the video.
Technical Checklist (Before You Upload):
- Record horizontally (landscape mode) in at least HD quality (720p or higher).
- Use a stable device or tripod (do not hold the phone in your hand).
- Give yourself 30 seconds at the start to sit and get comfortable before speaking.
- Record a short test video to check your audio and lighting.
- Keep the background neutral and tidy.
- Speak slowly and clearly so we can understand you, even if English is not your first language.
- Save the video as an MP4 file.
- Upload it using the special link we send you after you complete the video request form.
- Double-check that your video has uploaded successfully.
What NOT to Do (Common Mistakes):
- Do not speak for more than 2 minutes.
- Do not use flashy effects, music, or distracting text.
- Do not read your script word-for-word.
- Do not record with poor lighting or echoing sound.
- Do not let other people interrupt or make noise while recording.
- Do not discuss negative or controversial topics.
