Leadership Moments
October 8, 2025 - 2 minutes readWe are in the third and final year of our school goal: empowering students to cultivate a deep understanding of their Learner Profile attributes so they can become proactive leaders in their educational journey, confidently navigate conflict resolution, and passionately support causes they care about.
Our Progress and Insight
Students have developed a stronger understanding of leadership and recognise how Learner Profile traits help them become not just better learners, but better leaders. However, many children still view leadership as positional—something reserved for those with specific titles or roles.
Our Focus This Year: Leadership Moments
In this final year, we’re emphasising “Leadership Moments”—opportunities for children to take the lead in meaningful, everyday ways. These aren’t necessarily the obvious forms of leadership like organising our Terry Fox Run or presenting at assemblies. Instead, Leadership Moments happen when students recognise themselves as community members and seize opportunities to lead through:
-Modelling resilience when facing disappointment
-Creating safe spaces for peers to take learning risks
-Building momentum and buy-in for projects
-Including or standing up for peers with less social power
These moments require students to be aware of themselves within the community and attentive to the experiences of others around them.
Shifting the Paradigm
While our school has many people in formal leadership positions—teachers, education assistants, principals—we want students to see themselves as leaders too. Not in every moment (that would be tiresome!), but when moments align with their passions and skills.
Recognition and Identity Building
We’ll recognise these contributions with Leadership Moment tickets that highlight when a child demonstrates a Learner Profile attribute. Our goal is to help students follow a progression: I did. I can. I am. By celebrating what they’ve done, we encourage their belief that they can do it again, ultimately making leadership part of their identity. These recognitions help students see their growth in Learner Profile traits and empower them to step into future leadership moments.
This is the first of two posts about our school goal’s final year. The second post will explore the Taking Action phase of the Inquiry Cycle.
