Orange Shirt Day

October 8, 2025 - 2 minutes read

West Bay, and schools across Canada, are recognizing Orange Shirt Day today.

Over the years, “Every Child Matters”, has emerged as the theme, and it holds deep meaning for us at West Bay. We strive to be a school where all children are valued and celebrated for who they are and who they wish to be, where relationships with family and home are central, and where cultural and linguistic diversity enriches our entire community.

Residential schools denied Indigenous children all of these things. It is important for Canadians to learn the truth of the history and legacy of residential schools and they do so at West Bay in age appropriate ways. Our youngest students learn about the richness of Indigenous peoples across Canada and the importance of inclusivity. As students mature, learning about the purpose and operation of the schools becomes important so that each successive generation of Canadians can commit to reconciliation and the actions that support the statement, Every Child Matters.

If your family would like to engage with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, please see the events and resources below. I have listed resources for both adults and children so you will want to take a moment to determine what is appropriate for your child.
