The Hollyburn Legacy

August 31, 2016 - 2 minutes read

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I am so excited for this new beginning, my first at Hollyburn Elementary School!

Hollyburn holds a special place in my family history. My husband’s Grandfather, David Chapman, attended Hollyburn over 80 years ago. He went on to attend West Vancouver Secondary and then from there was a highly successful machinist who went on to work provincially and federally in the area of labour relations. He was a member of the Federal Transport Commission. In 2002 he was awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal by Her Majesty the Queen, in recognition for his service.

My mother-in-law, Marian Grimwood, also attended Hollyburn in the early 1960s. She too continued on to WVSS and then to UBC where she completed her degree in microbiology, one of very few women in the science department at the time. She became one of the first women in B.C. to hold a class 1 Drivers License which allowed her to operate concrete-mixer trucks and semi-trailers; a true trailblazer! She currently runs and owns a successful property development company in Kelowna with her husband. The legacy of Hollyburn Elementary is strong in my family and I am so honoured and privileged to be a part of this school.
