Traffic & Safety Information

The Traffic and Safety Committee was formed to address the many concerns of parents and SD45 staff in regard to increased traffic around district schools. A community approach was taken involving the District of West Vancouver (DWV) and West Vancouver School District (WVSD) and the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) as well as ICBC.

The Traffic and Safety Committee mandate is to develop recommendations to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic safety around all our school sites. Ideas are submitted and (budget allowing) resources are directed to alleviate these issues in the short and long term.

Student School Travel Video Contest

WE HAVE A WINNER!
Congratulations to Bill Li, Mackey Zhou, Cindy Zeng, and Derek Wu who shared the top prize for their entry in the Sentinel Sustainable Commuting Initiative competition.  The video effectively captures the frustration we all feel when stuck in traffic, and the sense of freedom and fun that comes when we can choose alternatives.  The judges said it was funny, engaging and very clear in its message.

Watch the WINNING VIDEO here.

Bike to school week is May 29- Jun 2. If you haven’t register already take a look at the links before:

Secondary Schools

Secondary schools are encouraged to register through Go by Bike Week and track their trips using our online tracking tool instead of through Bike to School Week. To sign up, a member from the high school will act as your team leader, setting up the high school as a ‘team’ by registering the school at bikehub.ca/registration. After creating a team, your team leader is able to invite fellow students and teachers to join your team. They are eligible to win Go by Bike Week prizes by logging trips through our tracking tool. In addition a separate set of prizes are also awarded to top-performing high school students (e.g., most trips logged, most km logged, the top rider from new school).

  • Is School for Learning New Ideas or Confirming What We Already Know? May 1, 2024
As we navigate the halls of our schools – whether those are the traditional ones or the virtual ones, a question emerges that challenges the core of our educational journey: Are we here to discover the unknown or to reinforce what we already believe? As I read news stories from around North America recently, I […]
  • Technology and Innovation – Where Next? April 1, 2024
When you are known for technology and innovation, you experience this ongoing mix of excitement and adrenalin at some points of the year and anxiety and worry at other points. The question I get asked most is – “So, what’s next?”   I usually just want to snap back, “Come on, can we just do what […]
  • Embracing Physical Literacy: More Than Just Fitness March 11, 2024
I have written before (HERE) about the importance of not just moving more, but developing physical literacy skills with students.  This was pre-pandemic. And if anything the limited activity many had during the COVID-19 pandemic increased these challenges leading to what many are seeing as a health crisis. In the world of education, we rightly […]
  • Still Writing February 29, 2024
I have been thinking about writing this week. The generative AI discussion is really making people think about what writing might look like in the future. It was less this though, and actually a quote from one of my favourite local writers in the media, that struck a chord with me. Howard Tsumura, who I […]
  • A Changing Vibe to Snow Days January 30, 2024
The first text came about 6:15 AM.  It was from a now retired former school superintendent from a local district.  It was short and to the point. You have gotten soft. It is not even snowing anymore. He was half-joking.  But it definitely speaks to some changing expectations as earlier this  month, our district, along […]
