Hosts provide a welcoming and supportive living environment, and students are expected to approach the experience with respect, adaptability, and an open mindset. While a host provides support, it will be different from living at home and may present challenges as students learn to adapt to new routines, expectations and household dynamics.

Students participate in everyday household routines and are responsible for contributing appropriately, such as following house guidelines and sharing basic chores. This structure supports mutual respect and helps students adjust to daily life in a new country.

It is normal for students to have questions as they prepare for daily living in their accommodation. The Student FAQs section of this page provides additional information to help set clear expectations.

Adjusting to a new household, language, and environment can take time. Periods of uncertainty or discomfort are a common part of the transition and usually improve as students become more familiar with their surroundings. Students are encouraged to be patient with themselves during this adjustment period and to communicate respectfully with their host and program staff as needed.

[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row background_style=”image-right” css=”.vc_custom_1620257586203{background-image: url(https://westvancouverschools.ca/international/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2021/05/Isabella-and-Jack-1.jpg?id=5098) !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1620257489645{padding-bottom: 20px !important;}” el_class=”Isabella”][vc_column_inner width=”5/6″]

Hosts in Canada

– Living with a host offers students practical insight into daily life in Canada. Households vary in structure, routines, and lifestyles, and students are expected to be respectful of these differences.

– Many Canadian families have pets, most commonly dogs or cats, which typically live inside the home and are part of the family. Students should be prepared to share living spaces with the family’s pets.

– Commuting is a normal part of daily life for many students and families on the North Shore. Travel to and from school often involves public transportation, and bus rides of up to 60 minutes are common. Commuting times of up to 60 minutes each way using public transportation are common for both domestic and international students.

Living farther from campus can offer access to a broader range of community amenities, such as shopping areas, beaches, and connections to Downtown Vancouver.
