Back to School Information – September 3rd, 2021

Welcome to the 2021/2022 School Year at Hollyburn Elementary!

The following information should help you to prepare your children for the week ahead. Please read the information together as a family so that we know what to expect from our first week back at school.   I have also attached a copy of our School Calendar, Bring Your Own Device (grades 4-7) and our school Handbook.

We are just a few days away from our first day of school on Tuesday, Sept 7th. Tuesday is a short day; grades 1 – 7 are in session from 8:50 – 9:45 only. Returning students can line up at the classroom of their previous year’s teacher, and new students can come to the front door to be directed to the gymnasium for drop off and pick up. We will focus on school expectations and Health and Safety guidelines for the year ahead. Students do not need supplies on day one. The class configurations will be shared with students following the first week of school.

On Wednesday, Sept 8th, students in grades 1-7 will return to school full time. New students can meet in the gym, and will be placed in a classroom for the week. Pick up will be in their new classrooms, and names will be posted on classroom windows. Kindergarten Gradual Entry also begins on September 8th. A separate schedule was shared with Kindergarten families on Monday. Please check your email, including the junk folder.

There will be a lot of information shared by teachers and the school office next week. I would suggest getting a start on it early. The Policies and Procedures forms needs to be completed online for each student, either new or returning.  Use this link: https://eforms.sd45.bc.ca/Form/PandP

If you have yet to order school supplies, here is a link to the supplies list:  https://creativepacks.ca/collections/packs/hollyburn-elementary-school

Hollyburn Elementary is a safe school. We will follow all provincial and school district guidelines to keep your child safe from communicable diseases, including Covid-19. Attached you will find the provincial guidelines. Health and Safety procedures at Hollyburn will also include:

  • A mask mandate for all staff members and students in grades 4-7.
  • Staggered school start and end times (Divisions 12, 11, 10, 9, 8 will be 8:50 – 2:50, Divisions 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 will be 9:00 – 3:00)
  • Staggered recess and lunch times.
  • Regular cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces
  • Hand washing and sanitizing procedures for all transitions

We will also ask all families and staff to complete a Daily Health Check before attending school. See the “When To Get Tested” attachment for details.

Remember, if your child will be late or away from school for any reason, it is important that you inform the school as soon as you know. Our number is 604 981 1220.

We can’t wait to see you soon,

Back to School Information – August 25th, 2021

Hello Hollyburn Families,

I hope that you all had a wonderful summer! I spent a lot of time walking in the park, reading, trying new dinner recipes, and changing the diapers of our four-month-old boy, Beau. It was great.

Emily Miller (Vice Principal) and I hosted a New Families Virtual Welcome on Wednesday, August 25th. Thank you to those who were able to attend. If you were not able to attend but still have questions, please don’t hesitate to email me; nblackburn@wvschools.ca with questions at any time.

While there is more information to come for all families next week, here are a few general reminders.

  • Tuesday, Sept 7th is a short day. Students are only in session from 8:50 – 9:45. Students in Grades 1-7 only.
  • Returning Hollyburn students can line up at their previous classroom. New Hollyburn students can enter the school and will be directed to meet in the library. School supplies such as binders, pencils, etc. are not necessary on the first day of school.
  • Please complete a health assessment before sending your child to school. Do not send children to school with symptoms of illness.
  • Pick up and drop off is located on Duchess Ave. in front of the school. Please do not leave your car in this space. Since space is very limited, I highly walking to school, or if driving is necessary, I recommend arriving early and parking in the neighborhood for a short walk to Hollyburn.
  • Kindergarten Gradual Entry begins on Wednesday, September 8th. The first week consists of two hours only sessions in the AM or PM. More information to come next week on your child’s scheduled AM or PM kindergarten session for September 8,9 and 10. Week two is mornings only for kindergarten.
  • Students and families will know their class placement for the 2021/2022 school year on Friday, September 10th.
  • We do have before and after school care available through our Seamless Day program, which is now open to Kindergarten students and their siblings, but may expand to grade 1 if space allows. Contact the principal for more information.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon. More information for all families to come next week.
