YEAR 4 ARTS EDUCATION 9

(MAE-09-IB)

In Art 9 creative approaches to image development are explored and students will begin to develop their own creative voice and style. The application of the elements and principles of design is extended into several areas of visual expression; drawing, painting, graphics, sculpture, and ceramics. Students will have the opportunity to view, discuss and critique the work of other artists including their peers. Students will use their sketchbook to draw, design, paint, explore and take notes on techniques learned in class.

FINE ARTS AND APPLIED SKILLS: ART BASICS 11

(MFNAS11 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS AND/OR APPLIED SKILLS)

This is an exciting entry level art course for the inexperienced art student. The course focuses on the fundamentals of 2 and 3 dimensional art.  Students will learn skills and gain an understanding in painting, drawing, graphic design and digital imaging with an emphasis on improvement rather than expertise.  Both traditional tools and computer technology will be used in class.  Students who complete this course will receive two Fine Arts credits and two Applied Skills credits necessary for graduation.  This is a full year course that is open to grade 10 students.

ART FOUNDATIONS 11

(MAF–11 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

Art 11 provides endless opportunities for creative growth. The course work covers the fundamentals of drawing and image making in selected 2D and 3D media.  Students will have the opportunity to develop independent projects and personal sketchbooks will be used for life drawing and image development. Technology will be used as a tool in conjunction with traditional media.  A portion of the course will introduce aspects of art appreciation in relation to studio applications and students will have opportunities to participate in group critiques. This course is a prerequisite for Art Foundations 12.  Optional fee for enrichment materials-$40.

ART FOUNDATIONS 12

(MAF–12 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This exciting advanced course is geared towards those art students who enjoy art and are interested in working in a semi self-directed studio setting. A variety of assignments will address creative problems which will be solved using a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, printmaking and graphics. Throughout this course students will develop their personal styles and also research and critique the work of other artists.  Students will be expected to visit galleries and museums, and complete a thorough presentation portfolio and a sketchbook.

STUDIO ARTS: DRAWING AND PAINTING: PRE AP 11

(MSADP11ENR ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This course is made available to accommodate students who have expressed an interest in completing an Advanced Placement Exam. Teacher directed units will be presented in accordance with the College Board exam requirements. Emphasis will be placed on the completion of a volume of quality pieces(24). There will be an expectation that students do extra course work out of class time in order to complete the AP requirements by the end of AP 12.

Recommended Preliminary Course= Art Foundations 9 or Visual Arts: Media Arts 9.

STUDIO ARTS: DRAWING AND PAINTING 12

(MSAPD12 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This advanced course is geared towards the serious art student who enjoys art and is interested in further developing their portfolios. A variety of assignments will address creative problems that will be solved using a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, printmaking and graphics. Students will be expected to work independently to develop a strong portfolio that will demonstrate their skill, knowledge, and personal style. They will also research career possibilities in this field. Students will be expected to visit galleries and museums, and complete a thorough presentation portfolio and a sketchbook that could be submitted for admission to a post secondary art program.

 AP STUDIO ARTS: DRAWING 12

(ASAD-12 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This course is made available to accommodate students who have expressed an interest in completing a first-year post secondary course credit while still in high school. Teacher directed units will be presented in accordance with College Board Evaluation requirements. Emphasis will be placed on attaining a volume of quality finished pieces (24). As well, students will be both challenged and mentored in developing their own personal concentrations.  

Optional fee for enrichment materials-$70.

 To receive Advanced Placement credit, student portfolios must be evaluated by the College Board in May.

Prerequisite = Studio Arts: D & P: Pre AP 12.  Teacher permission is required to enrol in this course as well as enrolment in another senior art block.  

AP 2D DESIGN PORTFOLIO

VISUAL ARTS: ARTS YEAR 4-MEDIA ARTS

(MADMA09-IB)

This course is an introductory course to Media Arts and open to any grade 9 students. You will work on various design principles and techniques by using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. As many of the Media Arts works are photography-based, you will also explore Photography. The final unit of each term is an MYP unit; however, the first units make up the foundations for the final MYP unit. In this sense, the final MYP unit can be considered as the term-long unit that summarizes the whole term.

VISUAL ARTS: CERAMICS 10/11/12

(MVAG-10CER, MSACS11, MSACS12 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

Ceramics is  a 3D Visual Arts course is designed for students who enjoy hand building using clay as the primary medium. Students will explore both functional and artistic applications. Creativity and experimentation will be key in their image development. Students will learn proper ceramic techniques: slab, coil, pinch and be introduced to wheel throwing. Students will be expected to create pieces using a variety of finishing techniques: glazing, raku, shoe polish, hand rubbing, and painting. Work will be both utilitarian and sculpture.

VISUAL ARTS: MEDIA ARTS 11

(MVAMT11 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This is an introductory course to Media Arts and open to any students with no experience in Media Arts. It is also open to students who have taken Media Arts 9 (you will be dealing with more artistic themes and subjects using new techniques and effects). You will work on various design principles and techniques using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. As many of the Media Arts works are photography-based, you will also explore Photography.

VISUALS ARTS: MEDIA ARTS 12

(MVAMT12 ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This is a second-year Media Arts course and open to any students with Media Arts 11 credit. You will continue to cultivate various design principles and techniques. There are several units in each term in which you work with different with more refined and complex Media Arts effects using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. As many of the Media Arts works are photography-based, you will also continue to explore Photography, and you are encouraged to seek opportunities to take photos outside the class to enhance your art work.

VISUAL ARTS: MEDIA ARTS: PHOTOGRAPHY 11

(MVAMT11-PH ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)

This is an introductory course to Photography and open to any students with no experience in Art or Photography. You will need a digital camera that you can use to take photographs. Any digital cameras would be sufficient. There are several units in each term in which you will work with different photographic settings, themes, and subjects.

Optional fee for enrichment materials-$40.

Note: Students may receive credit for only one of Media Arts 11 or Photography 11.

VISUAL ARTS: MEDIA ARTS: PHOTOGRAPHY 12

(MVAMT12-PH ~ 4 CREDITS FINE ARTS)  

This is a second-year Photography course and open to any students with Photography 11 credit. You will need a digital camera with “manual controls” that you can use to take photographs. Any digital cameras with “manual controls” would be sufficient. There are several units in each term in which you will work with more complex and refined photographic settings, themes, and subjects.
