Meet the Teacher: This is a reminder to all those who have volunteered for Meet the Teacher evening that you need to be in the office at 5 pm today.

 

PSAT

Any grade 10 or 11 students who are planning to attend universities in the USA should write the Pre-SAT test. The test is being written on Wednesday, October 11th in Rockridge Library from 8:00-11:00 AM.  The cost of the test is $35. See Mr. McDowell in counselling to reserve a spot.

  • Grade 8 volleyball: there is a very important meeting at lunch today in Ms. van D’s room, P2.  You MUST attend this meeting in order to get necessary forms and practice and game schedules. Don’t know if you’re on the team?  Check the roster in the gym. See you all at lunch in P2!

The senior Field Hockey team played STA at Rutledge and put up a great effort. Although we lost 4-2, we dominated the second half. Goals were by Jamie Borthwick and Roos Nijnick.

  • Rockridge Golf Team had their first game yesterday and won against Sutherland. They have completed their undefeated season with 6 wins and 0 loss. Mitchell Catania, Spencer Snider, Jordan Jarvis, and  Isaac Rosin played for Rockridge, and our captain, Mitchell Catania had the best score with 72.

Rockridge Athletics

  • ULTIMATE – There will be a MANDATORY meeting for ALL PLAYERS TODAY at lunch in W204 about Provincials. Practices this week are Tues & Thurs at Eagle Harbour after school. Playoffs are all day at on Friday at Loutet.
  • Rockridge Ice Hockey – the team finished the season in the semis with a 3-2 loss to Magee.  Playing with 8 players, the team did not have enough players to compete against the opposition’s full bench.  The first period saw the team down 3-0.  With one defense down with a broken skate blade and another player leaving to go to work, the team bared down and limited the opposition’s chances.  We fought back with 2 goals in the 2nd, but it was not enough to beat a good team.

Volleyball

  • This was an exciting weekend for volleyball.  Please congratulate  U-15 provincial gold medal  champs Natalie S, Lauren S and Jewel M.
  • Congratulations to all- star  Bryanna B who won bronze at U 16 provincials and her team is 3rd to BC.
  • Lastly, congratulations to seniors Jenny M and Una B who won gold at U 17 provincials.

New York, New York: You heard right NEW YORK, NEW YORK! It is happening Spring Break 2018. If you want to be part of it come TODAY… again that is TODAY at lunch to room C201 for an information meeting!

Rockridge Athletics

  • ULTIMATE – The last game of the regular season is TODAY after school at Sentinel at 4pm.  Warm up starts at 3:30, see you there!
  • ICE HOCKEY – The RO Ice Hockey team came through with a big win vs. Moscrop yesterday.   A 10-0 win with our AP call up Sawyer Nicholson providing 3-4-7pts., Brandon Johannson 3-0-3pts. Oscar Davidson 1-2-3pts., Noah Leeson 2-1-3pts, Jackson Kallweit 1-1-2pts, Joe Newfield 0-2-2pts, Nick McLean 0-3-3pts.  John McKenzie earned the shutout.  It was a tight game at 1-0 after one until the 8 minute of the middle frame when we exploded with 6 goals.  We have a semi-final game today vs Magee.

Rockridge Athletics

  • ULTIMATE – There is practice today after school at Eagle Harbour field. The last game of the regular season is on tomorrow at Sentinel at 4pm.

Rockridge Golf Team had their fifth game yesterday and won against West Vancouver. It was their fifth straight win. Spencer Snider, Jack Li, and Brayden Smeaton played for Rockridge, and our acting captain, Brayden Smeaton displayed his strong leadership to lead the team.

Outdoor Academy: Hey grade 9’s! Did you know that next year you could do grade ten as part of Rockridge’s new Outdoor Academy?  This day 1 program will have you out of the classroom and into the outdoors doing lots of great activities like hiking, snowshoeing, paddling, camping and the list goes on and on.  There will be at least one multi-day trip each term. Come to a meeting in Ms. Herman’s room on Friday in W211 for more information.

  • Rockridge Golf Team – Are you a good golfer? If you are interested in playing for our team, you need to contact Mr. Taguchi in person or by email by Wednesday, March 8.

  • Mountain bikers, this is a reminder that you must submit your completed forms and you two cheques in to Mrs. Ferrajohn in W204 before March break. Without these complete, you won’t be able to participate.

  • Also a representative from the University of Exeter will be available to answer questions in the Conference room today at 3:00PM

3RD ANNUAL ROCKRIDGE CAREER EXPO – FEBRUARY THE 2ND FROM 7-9PM: Rockridge is hosting the third annual Career Expo.  Based on a survey completed by our grade 11 and 12 students, we have connected with a wide variety of professionals from the community including a movie director, lawyer, doctor, entrepreneur, politician, police officer, engineer, CFO, chef, designer and many more!

Students will learn how these speakers achieved their career goals, the highlights and challenges of their career as well as have an opportunity to network.  Students will attend  two sessions, one from 7-8pm and an another from 8-9pm. There will be eight various rooms, with three to four presenters, grouped together by theme. Feedback from students attending this event has been very positive so please encourage your students to attend.

Rockridge Junior improv: Congratulations to Rockridge Junior Improv Troupe and their coaches for placing 5th out of 26 Lower Mainland teams. They now advance to the Finals on Sunday where they will compete with the other semi-finalist teams. Tickets available through eventbrite.com The team brought energy and a whole lot of Rockridge pizazz to the stage at Waterfront Theatre on the weekend.   • Congratulations to the Senior Girls Volleyball who finished their long season last night at the Lower Mainland Tournament.  Their final, must win match ended in a battle where they ultimately lost in a 3 set 13-15 battle to Argyle Secondary.   Great court play by the team:  Marina F, Talia M, Jenny M, Una B, Alexandra S, Kayla K, Bryanna B and Natalie S and Lauren S.   The team demonstrated fair play and sportsmanship and made Rockridge proud.

POST SECONDARY: Ever dreamed of attending school in southern California?   University of California is now accepting applications for their 2017 fall intake.  Come to C207 at lunch today to find out about UC Irvine.  Grade 11 students thinking about University of California are encouraged to attend as well.

Wondering about how to how to pay for your university education?  It is never too early to start planning.  Tonight at 6:30PM we will be hosting an expert in the field.  This comprehensive presentation covers topics ranging from building your scholarship foundation to crafting a strong personal statement. Contrary to popular belief, students do not need 95% averages or international achievements to win scholarships.  There is a 5$ per person or 10$ per family fee to attend this presentation.  All funds collected will go directly to the Rockridge Scholarship fund.

ROCKRIDGE ATHLETICS

Gr. 8 Volleyball: Congratulations to Rockridge Blue who has made the playoffs this year!  The quarter finals will start next Wednesday with a game against Handsworth Gold at 5:30pm.  A reminder to all players that there is a practice today after school in the gym from 3-4:30.  Please remember to bring your fees for Friday’s cupcake tournament!

Amidst the blowing rain, hills, and mud puddles, our Cross Country running team managed some fine finishes at the Zone meet yesterday:Bronwen C qualified for BC’s, Paolo V placed 6th in his age group, and Demetri P placed 8th in his age group.  All athletes deserve to feel proud for completing the race!

All Grade 9 & 10 girls interested in playing basketball this year, please meet at 12:50 this Friday, October 28th in W216 for a brief meeting.  Please see Ms. Armstrong if you are interested but cannot attend.

  • Grade 9 Volleyball Team: you have a meeting in the gym today in order to get organized for the upcoming tournament.  This meeting is mandatory, so come!
  • Last night the senior girls played a long and tight match against Sentinel.  Although ultimately losing, we had a match point in every game.  Great play from our girls: Captain Marina, Una, Jenny, Talia, Bowen, Kayla, and special props to Power hitter, Bryanna and the “Slovakian warrior” Alexandra.  Special acknowledgement to Grade 9 middles, Natalie and Lauren who were awesome.  Great job, team…..playoffs next week!

POST SECONDARY: If you are interested in studying at a smaller woman’s college at Western University come to Brescia’s presentation today in C207 at lunch.  Brescia is a woman’s only college that offers great opportunities for students interested in everything from Foods and Nutrition to Business.

John Hopkins University Presentation: Tomorrow at 7:00PM a representative from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD will be presenting on “How Selective US Universities Make Admissions Decisions”.  Johns Hopkins is one of the most selective Universities in the States so this should be an interesting information session for anyone applying to schools that are very competitive to get into.  We encourage both grade 11 and 12 students and their parents to attend.  Rockridge is offering this session in conjunction with Johns Hopkins for all students in the lower mainland.

Last night the Senior Girls Volleyball Team played an epic 5 set match against Bodwell.  Amazing serving and hitting from Bryanna B and an outstanding job by both Una B who stepped in to take over the setting duties, and international student Alexandra S playing right side.  Excellent passing and hitting by Jenny M, who inspires us with her energy.  The entire team became a unit and played great volleyball including Talia M, Bowen W and libero: Kayla K!  At a crucial time, Maya D came off the bench and served 6 points to gives us a lead and pushed us to a 15-10 finish!  Incredible teamwork, energy and support……so proud!  Tonight 3:30 at Mulgrave…..be part of the cheering section as we fight for a playoff berth!

  • Vancouver’s largest US University and College Fair will take place TODAY at the West Point Grey Academy Gym. Any grade 10/11 or 12 students interested in going to the states for post secondary studies should attend.  The Fair is free and open to students and their parents between 4:00PM and 5:00PM.  If you need more details on the Fair please come to the Career Centre.
  • Today we are hosting Minerva University at 9:00AM in the conference room and at 11:00AM we have the University of Miami coming in. Please ensure you have your teacher’s permission if you plan on attending either of these events.

Jazz Band Students – your practice after school is CANCELLED today

Grade 12 Parent Information Evening: All grade 12’s and their parents should attend the post-secondary information presentation being held on Tuesday, October 4th in Player’s Hall at 6:30 PM. This presentation is a grad transitions event for students who plan to be attending college or university in the fall of 2017. Information on all aspects of graduation and post-secondary programs and application processes will be discussed.

International Walk to School Week – Students Ride Buses for Free!: Students around the world will be walking and wheeling to school October 3-7, 2016, as part of iWalk(International Walk to School Week).  This campaign encourages students, parents, staff and community members to celebrate the many benefits of walking and wheeling to school. In recognition of this event, elementary and high school students are invited to ride all TransLink buses for free during that time.

CUE: Rockridge is hosting 50 Canadian universities this evening from 6:30Pm to 8:30PM in the gym.  This is the largest post-secondary event we will host this year.  If you are planning to attend college or university come to this event and talk to schools from as far away as Prince Edward Island and as close as the North Shore.  If you aren’t sure of what questions you can ask the representatives come to the Career Office for a list of suggested questions.  This event is free and open to all students and their families.

Ivey school of Business: On Wednesday morning at 10:00AM a representative from the Ivey school of Business on the Western campus in Ontario will be available for a presentation in the Career’s Office.  The Ivey school of Business is one of Canada’s leading business schools and provides a unique two plus two opportunity where students study in a chosen faculty for the first 2 years and then for the last two years do an honours degree in business. Reminder to all students: Photo day is Monday!

Leadership 11 students.  Leadership 11 will meet in the Library at 3 pm on Monday, September 12th.  It is important for all Leadership 11 students to attend this meeting.  See you on Monday!

Attention Grade 8 Girls!  Are you interested in playing Volleyball this fall?  If so, tryouts continue TODAY and MONDAY after school from 3-4:30pm in the Gym.  Tryouts are open to everyone, whether you’ve played before or are new to the game!  Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Senior Boys Soccer will have their first try out on Monday after school on our field.
